The Ten Worst Car Factories In History – Rootes Group Linwood

The Ten Worst Car Factories In History.

Remember the Volvo P1800? Well, you want the S version because it was built in Sweden instead of Scotland, along with many of the Chrysler-Rootes Group cars.ranwhenparked has more:

The Chrysler-Rootes plant in Linwood, Scotland was pretty terrible. It was constructed specifically to build the Hillman Imp (full disclosure, I actually kind of like that car, my dad’s British expatriate friend had one for decades).

Chrysler wanted to build the car at their existing factory in Ryton, but oh no no, the UK government had other ideas. With Scotland’s shipbuilding industry essentially dead (partly, OK, heavily due to government policy), the idea was to replace it with car production. So, Chrysler was denied the necessary permits to expand the Ryton plant, but was given generous subsidies to build a new factory in Linwood and really needed to build the car somewhere, so they went with it.

All their suppliers were still located in England, Linwood was basically in the middle of a vast no-man’s land for the auto industry, which led to high transportation costs and frequent parts shortages. The local workforce was inexperienced in car assembly, which led to poor quality and low productivity (the rush to get production going was also to blame, as it shortened training time). Turnover was high and labor problems were rampant – there were over two dozen strikes in one year alone. The factory operated deep in the red throughout its existence and was ultimately closed in the mid ’70s after only 13 years in operation.

Man’s prized ’79 Corvette found 33 years after it went missing in Detroit | The Detroit News

Detroit — A man’s prized Corvette that was stolen three decades ago in Detroit has been found in Mississippi.

George Talley says he was watching TV last week when AAA called to say his 1979 Corvette had been found.

Talley tells WXYZ-TV he was told the car still runs, has 47,000 miles on it and is sitting at a police station in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

The last time Talley saw the car was in 1981, before thieves took it from a parking spot along a Detroit street.

Hot Rods Head to Beaulieu — WordPress.com

BEAULIEU’S ever popular Custom & Hot Rod Festival, held on Father’s Day, saw hundreds of colourful customs and stunning hot rods flood into the picturesque parkland of the National Motor Museum.

The Festival, held in association with Victory Wheelers, the south coast’s leading Custom, American and Hot Rod club, welcomed 7,320 visitors.

A large variety of custom cars and motorcycles were on display, with plenty of unusual designs and eye-catching artwork for visitors to admire. A number of trade stands were open for business, selling clothing, Americana memorabilia, merchandise and accessories.

This year, three dragsters formed a special display in a corner of the Beaulieu Arena. The Ratcatcher Resurrection slingshot dragster and Joe Bond’s Nuthin Fancy fuel-altered dragster both fired up for watching visitors, showing off the powerful force of their engines, in morning and afternoon demonstrations.

Europe’s first dragster, Sydney Allard’s 1961 Allard Chrysler, which was officially returned to the National Motor Museum at last year’s Festival, following extensive renovation, was also on display.

Auto Factoids for Week of June 8, 2014

Let’s get right to the glory and the tragic historical events of this weeks Auto Factoids.

June 10, 1927 the Graham brothers purchased Paige-Detroit Motor Co. These guys started out producing glass and then moved into making conversion kits to turn Model T Fords in to truck.   They decided they wanted to produce their own trucks and made a deal with Dodge for the engines and selling their trucks though Dodge.  In 1927 they decided they wanted to go into the car business and make the historic purchase of Paige-Detroit Motor for what was $4 million dollars.  Renamed Graham-Page, they produced 6 and 8 cylinder cars using their own bodies (after buying Wayne Body Company) and light trucks.  Truck production ceases when Dodge threatened to enforce the non-compete clause of the original agreement.  Of note was the 8 cylinder engine they developed nicknamed the “Blue Streak”.  It soon became the name for the car. Graham brothers produced cars up until 1940 and only used their factory during WWII for various war effort production.  By 1946 they were producing cars again and farm equipment under Kaiser-Frazer name.  They eventually transferred all the rights to Kaiser-Frazer and their production facilities were sold to Chrysler.

1952 Chevy PickUp For Sale

Every town there are a couple places where folks just park cars they want to sell.  Those spots move around from time to time or new ones just popup.

There is one such place just down the street from my house.  It is just along the side of the road as you are headed out of town toward the freeway and right across from a large super store (grocery).   There is often everything from a trashed Ford Taurus and on up to large late model SUV’s.  There have even been some classics!!   Few weeks ago there was a 1969 Mustang – home made restoration and paint but not a bad looking car.  A few weeks ago there as a ’62 Ford Falcon with a bored out 302, dual exhaust.

Today had stop (ok…fine….I always stop!!) and lot at this 1952 Chevy pickup.  It was nicely done. I’d give the paint a 7 out of 10, the bed was nicely redone give that a 9 out of 10.  The interior was all original or restored to original.  Original material upholstery, gauges, steering wheel, dash.  Even had the original dash, stick shift and there near the top of the right hand side was the original push button radio.  So very cool.

I’m not selling, nor am I considering purchasing and I don’t know the seller.  Just thought it was a great looking car.  I didn’t talk to the owner but I did see the truck drive up under it’s own power as I was headed to the auto parts store and he was gone when I got back and stopped to look at it.  I believe it had the 6 cylinder  – but I have an issue with opening up a car without the owner there.  Maybe it an an alarm – my 1970 Mustang had one.

This baby looked great.  Asking price showed $23,000 obo.  Here are some pics:

5/14/1969 – Last Corvair build.  If you know only a little about automotive history or maybe politics or the consumer safety revolution of the 60’s and 70’s you’ll know the name Ralph Nader.  With a little Google’in you’ll find various search results linking him to the demise of the Chevy Corvair (and apple pie and America) – most are not flattering to Mr. Nader.   According to most accounts the last Corvair carried 6000 as the last 4 digits of it’s serial number.  The car was blanketed by the press when it rolled off the assemble, but then disappeared.   There are various stories as to the actual disposition of car #6000  but it remains a mystery.  We do know it was a two door, hard top,  Monza, Olympic Gold was the color and it likely had a Service 140 replacement engine.

I'm seeing the Corvair but can't help notice the Nova's on the rail car.

5/17/1868 – Horace Dodge was born in Niles, Mich.    Horace and his brother started out working in a boiler plant and invented a dirt proof ball baring and begin producing bicycles (1897).   In 1901 they began production automotive parts which led to a contract in 1902  to build transmissions for Oldsmobile.  The following year they refused a contract renewal with Olds and began producing engines for Ford.  By 1913 the Dodge boys were producing trucks, ambulances and other vehicles for the military.  The produced their first commercial car in 1917.

Stolen car alert: 1958 Rambler Ambassador | Hemmings Daily

via Stolen car alert: 1958 Rambler Ambassador | Hemmings Daily.

Keep an eye out for this car:

Any Northeasterner into AMCs must have seen Bob Majeski’s 1958 Rambler Ambassador over the last 14 years: In the time that he’s owned it, Bob has put 34,000 miles on it driving it to pretty much every major AMC show in the region. Now Bob is counting on that familiarity to bring his car back to him after thieves took it in broad daylight over the weekend.

“I used to joke, ‘Why would anybody ever steal it?’” Bob said. “It’s pretty much the only one around, and nobody needs any parts from it. And yeah, it’s a beautiful car, but it’s a 1958 Rambler, so who’d want it?”

Nevertheless, after he came back from a drive with some friends, mapping out the weekend’s dust-off run for the Connecticut region of the American Motors Owners Association and AMC Rambler Club, he found his Ambassador missing from where he left it earlier that afternoon in the parking lot of the All Seasons Inn and Suites in Smithfield, Rhode Island.

“I’m floored,” he said. “I can’t believe anybody would want to steal this car with AMXs and Javelins around it. All I can figure is that somebody thought they were stealing a ’57 Chevy, and somebody opening a container in South America will be surprised when they see my car.”
