▶ Griot’s Cover Car Story: Cherry | Rich & Marlayne’s 1957 Buick Special Estate Wagon – YouTube.

This a beautiful car, especially if you like station wagons.

These were huge cars. Weighing well over 4K pounds.  There were two stations wagons produced that year for Buick the 49 and the 49D.  Total production  for both was 13,020 units.

The engines in the Buick Special Estate Wagons were a V8 Overhead valve, cast iron block.  The power plant displaced 364 cubic inches.  The bore was 4.125″ and the stroke was 3.4″ giving the car 9.5:1 compression ratio.  Top that will a 2 barrel Stromberg (model 7-106) or a Carter (2529 or 2536 model) carb and it could produce get about 250 hps.

Mecum Chicago: 1969 Pontiac Firebirds Trans Am 400

There was more than a few eye-catching machines at the Mecum Auction to gaze upon and one that grabbed our pupils was this 1969 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 400. The vehicle garnered a 2009 National Olympic Gold freeze frame and lost and found award before undergoing a complete restoration in January 2012. Underhood, it still retains the factory-installed 400ci, 335HP Ram Air III V8 engine. Gears are selected with a four-speed manual transmission. The exterior sheet metal is coated in the correct Cameo White and Tyrol Blue paint while the interior has been freshened with new carpeting and Blue vinyl upholstery. Unique items include a Hurst Shifter, full gauges and a wood-rimmed Sport steering wheel.

Tucson Classics 7 Annual -BEST Car Show in Southern AZ – Highlights!!! Part 2

The thing about attending regional car shows in your region is there’ a very good chance that you are going to run some of the same cars, even in a show as big as this one.  Oh..don’t get me wrong I love looking at them but writing about the same cars is not very rewarding.  So I’m going to show you some of the cars I really enjoyed.

Of course I’m always drawn to the Vettes.

On September 13, 1945 Pontiac began producing cars again after WWII.   Well sort of. From 1946 to 1948, all Pontiac models were essentially 1942 models with minor changes – like interior and bright-work.  The next “all new” Pontiac was the 1949 model.

Looks a like the the '42 model you say? Yup.

When it comes to popular customs and lead sleds, one car stands above the rest as far as the most iconic in the industry, at least for most. After all, the 1949 Merc is no stranger to the hobby and finds itself accompanied by many of its same kind at virtually any show you attend. But just because the late 40s Mercury is one of the more notable lead sled designs amped up by today’s popularity doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have some stiff competition out there for the most gorgeous low-slung design.

AWESOME!

AWESOME!

A Photo Shoot – Studebakers – Coup and GT Hawk!

It’s monsoon season in Tucson and hence we are in a drought as far as car shows go.  So today was a great day – clear blue skies, with thunder storm beginning to pop up over the mountains (yes we have mountains in Az).

My son is a photographer and I’m a want too be.  So wanting to de-stress for a day I choose to check in with him and see if he had time to drag the old man around for a photo shoot.  He often takes a weekend day and tools around with his camera, which is fun and  with no specific agenda, just what the doctor ordered.

I picked him up and we headed to a park, that normally has an abundance of water.  Yes we have lakes in Arizona (although many are man-made or at least get a lot of help from managed care).  This place normally is home to fish, turtles and various water fowl (YES  we have ducks here too!!!).

As we approached the entrance a car turned out of the park and I didn’t immediately recognize and as we entered the park a see a 1920’s 4 door sedan, looking mostly original.  I was still not sure the maker.  As we entered the park and drove the round to the parking in back I spotted a rare hawk and it’s companion.

Yes that is a Golden Hawk... GT by Studebaker.

1937 Coup – split rear window.

Just our luck, during the Arizona car show drought season, we ran into the tail-end of a local Studebaker Club breakfast!!!!  And just my luck – only two cars were left, out of the 30 that showed up earlier and I missed maybe one of the oldest Studebakers I may every see in person.  A 1933 Sedan!!!

I got to speak to one of the members and inquired as to how many were in their club.  He believed that there were 30-40 with a total of just under 1oo exampled of the Studebaker legacy.  He himself owned these two car plus two more.

We’ll take a closer look at these two cars in the next couple posts.

Stay tuned!!
