Engine Mini-Series – Ford’s 410

I love engines!!!  Not just the big block, but some of the off beat, lower production/limited use, power plants.   Of course that’s one of the great things about our hobby – there is a wide variety to choose from.

I haven’t writing a post in this series in some time, but just the other day, while on my hunt for a new project car, I ran across a Mercury project that had a 410 as the engine. I bet even if you are a die-hard Ford guy, you might not have run into this engine.  This prompted me to do a little research which further prompted me to write what I found.

The 410 from a 1966 Mercury.

The 410 from a 1966 Mercury.

Most engines are derived from an engineered design that came before it.   The 410 came in two different series.  Produced from 1958 to 1968 it was part of the MEL series.  MEL was Ford’s designation for Mercury, Edsel and Lincoln.  From 1968 through 1976 it was in the FE series.  The early MEL series 410 was used exclusively in the 1958 Edsel Corsair and Citation.  It was also called the E-475 for it’s 475 foot-pounds of torque.  It sported a 4.20 bore and a 3.70 stroke and a compression ratio of 10.5:1.  Top that with 4 barrel Holly and it would produce, finish it off with dual exhaust you’ve got enough power to pull around those big Edsels.

The FE Series 410 was essentially Ford’s 390 (as was the 406) only given a bump in the stroke length (0.20″) to 3.98″ from the 390’s 3.78″.  It used the same heads as the 390 (2.04 intake and 1.57 exhaust valves).  Topped with a cast iron intake manifold and a Ford carb, it produced 330 horse power.

The MEL Series 410 was, as stated above, only installed in Edsel’s Cosair and Citation and that was only for 1958. That would make it an extremely limited use engine.  It was a 4v Carb, produced about 345 horse power and 475 ft-lbs of torque with a compression ratio of 10.5:1.

The FE Series was also used in just two years, 1966 & 1967 and in just one sub-brand, Mercury. For those years the 410 carried a 4v carb produced 330 horse power and put done 444 ft-lbs of torque using 10.5:1 compression.

Production number for the 1958 Corsair was 9,987 units.  For the Citation 9,299 units were produced.  Together those tells you that there were about 20,286 for the 410 engines produced in the MEL version.  I wasn’t able to find true production numbers for the FE series.

I haven’t check into the availability of parts for either 410 Series, but the MEL would seem unique and difficult source, however the FE shared most of the FE 390 engine.  I do know that the MEL series engines had unique cylinder heads.  The heads and block were milled at a 10 degree angle, giving them a wedge-shaped combustion chamber.

I did, in fact, pass on the project that prompted this post.

Rumor: GT350 Pricing To Start At $52,995 Before Tech or Track Pack – StangTV

Ford has said very little about the upcoming 2016 GT350, aside from telling us a few of the specifications. One of the key things they’ve neglected to mention so far has been pricing for the latest collaboration between SVT and Shelby.Horsepower Kings, is saying that they were able to get the inside scoop on much of the pricing plans for the upcoming flat plane crank powered Mustang. According to Horsepower Kings, the GT350 will have a base MSRP of $52,995. This would put the car under the price of its key competitor, Chevy’s Z/28, as well as below the previous generation GT500.

The world’s fastest electric car? – BBC Top Gear

Remember the Detroit Electric SP:01? Announced in 2013, it followed a well-thumbed recipe and promised to be an esoteric entrant in the eco-friendly sports car class.

SP:01

SP:01

Well, it’s back and in production form ahead of official sales in 2015. And it’s a bit different to before, adopting a new fastback body which lends it bold new rear styling as well as better handling, thanks to its new rear wing and diffuser combination.

SP1

As a result, it looks helpfully different to an Elise or a Tesla Roadster, with a hint of the wonderfully hardcore original Exige about it now. Good job, given it’s set to cost around £80,000, a figure quickly approaching BMW i8 money.

Under the skin, a 282bhp electric motor drives the rear wheels. With a hot hatch-like weight of 1175kg, it’s enough to hustle the SP:01 to 155mph via a 3.7sec 0-60mph time.

C6 2007 Corvette – Fuel Gauge/Low Fuel/Service Fuel System

If you’ve viewed the links below you’ll know that there are a few glitches that you need to be aware of with the some of the C6 Corvettes and most you can live with….at least for a while.

One of those is the fuel gauge issue mentioned in this  posting  C6 07 Corvette – Fuel Gauge/Low Fuel/Service Fuel System http://wp.me/p2YxYx-I4 .   So here’s the rest of the story.

The gauge issue started out as an intermittent annoyance, which only occurred when I filled the tank(s).  As you can see in the above posting and subsequent postings/comments that there was a common ‘solution’ for the problem.  Most owners believed that the use of Techron gas additive would clear that up.  But I’m betting most of them discovered that it wasn’t a dirty sensor, but a defective on.   I tried the Techron solution for months and it never seemed to clear up.  Eventually the gauge failed to work at all, except every now and then it would kick up and hang at a position on the gauge for a few miles and then drop back to the empty position.

Recently (within the last month) it began to work in the opposite direction, steadily showing some sort of fuel level, but inaccurate.

Here are the offending pieces – (there a long back story on how I got the old parts and I’ll share that in the past part of this post).

Compressed-Air Supercharging

Westech performance compressed air-supercharging

Westech performance compressed air-supercharging

There are very few new ideas in the world of high performance. But with modern technology, we can often revisit a clumsy, old idea and make it more efficient. Such is the case with compressed-air supercharging. The idea is simple enough. Compress and store a large volume of air into a high-pressure tank. Use a pressure regulator to control the air coming out of the tank, and step it down to a traditional boost pressure. Introduce the air on demand, and you have a killer supercharger that doesn’t create parasitic losses because the engine is not using power to drive it. Sounds simple enough, so what’s the catch?

Check out the details @ Compressed-Air Supercharging.

New 8-Speed Enables Quicker, More Efficient Corvette

I’m a GM fan. Have been since I  was a kid and currently drive a C6 Corvette as my daily.  I’m also a manual transmission guy so automatic transmission really aren’t a preferred option. Of course the new Corvettes has paddel-shifting which is state of the art, but what do I do with my left leg???!!!!

DETROIT – The all-new, GM-developed Hydra-Matic 8L90 paddle-shift eight-speed automatic transmission offered in the 2015 Corvette Stingray and Z06 enhances performance and efficiency, while delivering exceptional refinement and world-class shift responsiveness that rivals the world’s best dual-clutch transmissions.

In fact, in the 2015 Corvette Stingray, it enables a class-leading 29-mpg EPA highway estimate – a 3.5-percent increase in fuel economy over the previous six-speed automatic – and a quicker 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds, all while delivering wide-open-throttle upshifts quicker than those of the dual-clutch transmission offered in the Porsche 911.

“GM’s new 8L90 eight-speed automatic represents a rare win-win-win scenario for customers,” said Kavoos Kaveh, global chief engineer for eight-speed automatic transmissions. “It offers greater performance and efficiency, while weighing less than the transmission it replaces. That’s a rare accomplishment in the industry today – and one for which GM has been awarded more than two dozen patents.”
