Today the construction and engineering team extracts the 1962. After that there will be additional work done to stabilize the red spire, the walls of the sinkhole and the area immediately around the walls. This will take approximately 3 weeks.

After this has been completed, the construction firm employees will begin removing the dirt, concrete, rebar, Stinger lift, safety barriers and everything else until the remaining 5 cars have been extracted. The timeline for this is approximately an additional 3 weeks.

Thanks for your patience during Operation Corvette +!

Corvettes pulled from sinkhole at National Corvette Museum in Kentucky

Two classic Corvettes re-emerged Monday from a giant sinkhole that gobbled up those and six other prized vehicles still trapped beneath the National Corvette Museum in Kentucky. Workers in a cage painstakingly hooked straps around the cars before a

“The 650S receives a tweaked twin-turbocharged V8 similar to the 12C, but develops 641 hp versus the latter’s 616 hp.”

Oh only 616 HP in the 12C…..darn it!!!!!  🙂

This is the 650. Nice looking car. I've never been a fan of Lambo Doors.

Parking Lot Spot Light – L88

Even if you aren’t a Corvette lover (WHAT?!??) you know or have heard of the L88.   This was the designation of a racing engine used by GM in the Corvettes from 1967 – 1969 (0nly 3 years!!).  (Now there was a LT1 – 88 hybrid dubbed the ZLZ – lower compression – same out put.)

The engine sported a racing-spec cam with high-flow aluminum heads.  Toss in a couple of upgrades and you are looking at a compression ratio of 12.5:1 and rocking it at 430 hp!!!

And doesn’t it look great wrapped in that two-tone paint job.

This beauty was at my local hardware store.   Yeah…I’d drive it there.

How racing has changed over the years.  Now I’m not a big F1 follower although I did drive a F1 at Phoenix International Speedway, in Phoenix, AZ and that was impressive machine – slightly older model.  So I have a lot of respect of them and driving them for hours…well…let’s just say you are going to have be a hard a$$ or develop one!!!

So look at the McLaren’s new offering the shape is amazing.

Auto Racing Rules – The Good Old Days

Now any professional auto racing event has rules, upon rules, upon restrictions, upon more rules.  NASCAR, NHRA, even local Test & Tunes.

But there was a time when race was simple.

Here’s what that should be!!!

1. Limited to vehicles with 3 or more running wheels

2.  Must derive all their motive power from within themselves

3.  No vehicles shall be admitted to competition which depend any way on muscular exertion, except for purpose of guidance.

4.  Each Vehicle must be able to carry ‘comfortably’ at least two persons throughout the race.

5.  Judges will eliminate any vehicle (TECH CHECK) deemed to be unsafe to operate

6.  Judges will bar any entry they felt was not of “practical utility”.

(Rules 4 and 6 would eliminate nearly all of  what we call race cars today.)

Also in consideration was the practical nature of the machine, its cost, its economy, and it’s general appearance and design, in addition to the speed.  They even tested fuel consumption and efficiency of every car.

These were the rules for the 1895 Paris-Rouen and Paris – Bordeaux races.

How The Car Racing Sport Began – Urban Adventure Racing

The June 1895 Paris-Bordeaux-Paris race of 1,178 kilometers is what other historians consider as the first car racing event. There were 92 drivers who ran the race. Emile Levassor, who drove a Panhard 1205cc car, finished first with a time of

Slacking 101 – What’s coming up?

So I’ve been slacking since getting back from our Italy trip. Ok…that’s not exactly true.  Some slacking has taken place, however some time has been spent recovering from reconstructive surgery on my right shoulder – yes my shifting side!!!!!   They called it bicep tendon relocation, which is severing the upper connection of the tendon and relocating somewhere in the joint. See the actual surgical pic below….no…I’m kidding…no pic…seriously, ain’t nobody got time for that!!!

It’s been about three weeks and I’ve started physical therapy…or as I call it “pay as you go torture”.  Slowly coming back and I at least, with the proper adjustments do the driver’s seat, I can lay my arm on the console and shift the Vette – thank the Car Gods for short throw!!!!!

This also means with a bit of adjustment to the driver’s seat…Smile typing with both hands is now possible.

So coming up will be a gratuitous post on my new line of services that include auto restoration project management and certified auto appraisals.  I plan on continuing the Lost Classic Truck series and I have a few more engine pieces to do as well.

You’ll also see a piece I’m writing on a drag strip and some interesting figures on racing teams and as promised, some details on the cars and driving in Italy.

I’m also giving way some collectible cars from Motor Mint so get me your email and you’ll be entered to win.

So grab the RSS feed and drop me some comments on the articles.
