I just recently picked up a copy of GMs new Performance catalog and all I can say is WOW!! But we’ll dive into that in a future post.
Gracing the cover was the latest and greatest COPO Camaro. You remember those special order packages. Well they have brought it back and factory racing just jumped up and shouted “LET DO IT!!!!” [vodpod id=Video.15839761&w=425&h=350&fv=%26rel%3D0%26border%3D0%26]
There’s car art (art with cars) and then there’s car art (art on a car).
Here are a couple interesting pieces.
The first is in Prescott, Az. Prescott is beautiful city in up-state Arizona where we love to hang out. It features a beautiful town square that would rival any of them back East. That square is the venue of some very enjoyable events, include a collector’s car show and an all Corvette show, every year.
Walking a few blocks away from the square is a parking garage with one side depicting an a mural.

Notice the cars?
Here’s a close up:

Great art work!!!
Let move to the other end of the spectrum. I’m keeping in mind that “Art” is in the eye of the beholder..nah…that’s not working here!!!
Bisbee, Az is nearly the complete opposite of Prescott, Az. In fact, it’s even located at the opposite end of Arizona. Tucked in to the mountains, near the border of Mexico, it is very interesting mining town, turned tourist town. Bisbee sits in a time warp stuck between the 1960’s and mid 1970’s. Gives all the feel of the VW bus generation with a huge variety of artist’s, art galleries and old mining camp homes built into the side of the mountains. No..this ain’t the travel channel…so here’s the Art on the Car.
It appears to be a….why YES!!!…it is an El Camino. Ya..know….I can’t really say any more…you look at it…and give me some feed back!!!!
El Camino - Art'ed out
Yup...eactly...WTF!!!
Well..ya know....it was cheaper than going to MACCO for a paint job
With the upcoming release of the Shelby GT500 Super Snake many people will have an opportunity to put on of these limited edition Shelby’s inside their garage. It’s quite the opposite for the 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake as the person who wins this ebay auction for the only 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake ever produced will have the ultimate limited edition Mustang. The 1967 Shelby Super Snake sports a 427ci V8 with 520 horsepower, a 170 mph top speed and unique triple stripes. The ebay auction is set to end in a week. Check out the pictures after the fold.
As I’m sure you’ve heard or witnessed first-hand, Hurricane Irene threw her wrath against the eastern seaboard with initial landfall in North Carolina as a Category 1. Although predicted to be a Category 3 at landfall, this storm was still nothing less than a monster. This major hurricane realeased havoc from Myrtle Beach up to Maine as it churned along leaving major paths of destruction behind and massive amounts of rainfall. Power outages became widespread up the east coast, (includes my family in Pennsylvania at this current moment). Streams and creeks became raging rivers taking out roads, bridges, one being a 156-year-old hand-hewn bridge in upstate New York. It destroyed houses and stranded people in or away from their homes. Evacuated people are now stranded wondering the fate of their homes and personal belongings. Washed-out roads and bridges have left complete towns stranded without a way to get to or out like these towns in Vermont that have over 260 roads closed.
This storm has caused massive destruction and that has effected some of our own Mustang enthusiasts. Member, RobTRoma from PA, joked about getting a photo of his car next to a hurricane in our Mustang game thread. Featured above, what looks like a very nice ROUSH S-197 Mustang is sinking in a Subway parking lot in North Carolina during Irene’s throw-down. It almost has an ambience of Jaws coming out of the water before Roy Sheider exploded it.
One of the things I enjoy checking out is increase in the value of some of our US classic cars.
I recently ran across this breakdown in Hagerty Insurance magazine…it normally has some good articles. This one was about American Motors and it had a section on original cost of the cars and the current collector’s value. So check this out:
1967 Marlin – a cool looking car if you ask me – had a base prices of $2,963. Today that car will cost you about $23,100.
A good looking car in Two Tone paint.
1969 Javelin SST – love these cars – I once dated this girl who drove one and..oh…um..nevermind – back in the day they cost $3,144 and today average cost is $33,900.
69 Javelin SST
1970 AMX 390/325 – I know I’m suppose to love these cars – they being, perhaps the sporty-est of the AMC brand, but I don’t – they would run you $3,798 back then and now you can pick one up for a mere $55K!
1970 AMX
1972 Javelin SST – see my comment for the ’69 – base price in 1972 was $3,807 and today $22,400.
1973 Gremlin X Coupe – ok I really don’t care at all about these, except when I see them at the drag strip with a huge GM block stuffed between the fenders – they would set you back $2,098 back in ’72 and today you can get one have it mounted on a pole in the front yard for $11,700 (pole not included and labor extra and you’ll have to sign a waiver).
1973 Grebmlin X Coupe (Seen here without the pole)
1976 Pacer DL Coupe – well.. if wasn’t a DL coupe….ok even though it is…insert comment for Gremlin above – except for $15,000 you can pick one up today, remove the body from the frame, bury it upside down in backyard and with a little tweaking you can have a really cool hot tub.
1976 Pacer DL Coupe…just before it was turned into a hot tub!
OK..that was mean..here ya go:
’76 Pacer DL Sport Coupe
1978 Matador Hardtop Coupe would have tapped your wallet for nearly $5K (4,799) – I sort of liked these cars – but not a lot and today you can sort of like them for about $12,500 big ones.
78 Matador Coupe
Unless it look like this one!!!
This is the Matador X
Want to see some more brands laid out like this? Drop me a comment and I’ll dig some up.
Some people are visual creatures and some are more in tune with the mechanics of life. I am a visual creature. The shape and colors of things are what I see first. So the whole idea of designing and drawing cars just fascinates me. Since this is a Mustang enthusiast website, thinking of what the next Mustang will look like is a mini obsession of mine.
Back in September of 2009, I started following a blog on the design of the new Mustang for 2014. And what appeared on that blog just blew me away.
Now I realize that Area 51 exists for more than just concealing a crashed alien space ship. It is also a test area for military vapor ware that we may see 20 years or so after it is new, you know, after it becomes obsolete and is no longer top secret. Well, getting a glimpse into the design studios of a major car company is like getting a tour of Area 51. You may see things that amaze and confuse and things you may have thought only existed in someone’s twisted imagination.
So how would it feel to get a whole truck load of sketches of the 2010 Mustang, drawn by one of the designers, just months after the new design was introduced? Yeah, it was pretty special. Rob Jensen was one of the designers of the 2010 Mustang, specifically, the GT500. Now, maybe you have seen these sketches before. Maybe they amazed and confused you back then, as they were way too “artsey” for a production car. But some parts and pieces of them made it onto the 2010 cars and some of them were left on the drawing board, literally.
For the Mustang Enthusiast in the crowd that leans towards the visual, stunning design side of cars, please enjoy the collection of sketches in our gallery below. Some are from Rob Jensen, some are from others on the Ford Mustang design team. Still others are designs by professional artists and amateurs that put together some very impressive Future ‘Stangs.
One thing to keep in mind, if you are seeing it here, out in the open, then most likely it looks absolutely nothing like the next Mustang will look. Think of this as the Area 51 Museum of Mustang design. If you like something you see, give the artist some love as I will try to provide links to as many of the artists as I can. If there is another artist out there that we need to know about, definitely put them in the comments or drop us a line.
