The HVA in Monterey: A Recap of the Monterey Auto Week.

The HVA team was back on the ground this year covering the massive automotive mecca that is the Monterey Auto Week. Check out the recap of some of the sights, sounds and sensational automobiles at this year’s events on the Monterey peninsula.

The week leading up to the Pebble Beach Concours and the Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion is surely one of the big musts on any automotive diehard’s bucket list, has a little something for just about everyone with a need for speed, style and great cars. This year’s event saw the HVA team at all the week’s must-see happenings, from the week’s kickoff event at the Carmel-By-The-Sea Concours on the Avenue, straight through to Sunday’s main event on the 18th green, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and a little of everything in between.

Lost Classics – Trucks – Corvair Rampside

I love classic trucks and in my 3 plus years of bogging in this field I haven’t done much on trucks. Yes, you’ll see some in my Parking Lot Spot Light pieces but not much else.

Then I got to thinking about doing some articles to make up for that and I realize, after I picked up a book (“Collectible & Classic Trucks” by The Auto Editors of Consumer Guide) at one of my company’s stores (we specialize, among other things, used books) that even those in to the classic truck scene, often over look some really cool trucks.

So I thought I’d cover a few.  First up is one I forgot was ever made, much less have seen (in person) any in the past 20 years or so.  The Covair Rampside trucks.

This is a 61 Rampside

This is a ’61 Rampside

This are rear engined, air cooled workhorse that are clearly Corvair all the way.

Fully restored they look great.  But leaving them survivor style is really cool as well. Like David Hopkins’

David Hopkins "Everything mechanical is new, but when it came to do paint and body we just couldn't erase all the history."

David Hopkins “Everything mechanical is new, but when it came to do paint and body we just couldn’t erase all the history.”

These rough and tough working guy trucks were powered a by rear-mounted, horizontally-opposed six cylinder, air-cooled engine that delivered 80HP and 128 ft-lbs of torque with 145 cu-in of displacement.

This wasn’t the only truck that was Corvair based.  We’ll look at the others coming up.

Mecum Chicago: 1969 Pontiac Firebirds Trans Am 400

There was more than a few eye-catching machines at the Mecum Auction to gaze upon and one that grabbed our pupils was this 1969 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 400. The vehicle garnered a 2009 National Olympic Gold freeze frame and lost and found award before undergoing a complete restoration in January 2012. Underhood, it still retains the factory-installed 400ci, 335HP Ram Air III V8 engine. Gears are selected with a four-speed manual transmission. The exterior sheet metal is coated in the correct Cameo White and Tyrol Blue paint while the interior has been freshened with new carpeting and Blue vinyl upholstery. Unique items include a Hurst Shifter, full gauges and a wood-rimmed Sport steering wheel.

The automotive community is good at giving back. We love to find a good cause and raise some money to benefit it. So to benefit a children’s hospital in Canada, Total Cost Involved, Ford Racing, and many others got together to build a one of a kind 1956 F100 pickup.

The Snakebit F100, is a blending of classic F100 truck style, with modern technology. Wayne Halabura from Ford was instrumental in getting the project off the ground, and bringing all of the right suppliers together to make it happen. The truck was assembled in just eight months.

Under the hood is a supercharged 5.4 liter engine, the same as what’s found in 2007-2012 GT500 Mustangs, backed up by a TR3650 six-speed transmission. The wheelbase has been stretched by five inches thanks to the Total Cost Involved chassis. There’s also a Currie Enterprises nine-inch rear end with 3.73 gears in the back.

I can go on for more ‘Parts’ than there were Rambo or Rock movies, but I’ll stop with what I think was the star of the car show.  It was only on display, so it wouldn’t be taking any trophies home.

Tucson Classics 7 Annual -BEST Car Show in Southern AZ – Highlights!!! Part 2

The thing about attending regional car shows in your region is there’ a very good chance that you are going to run some of the same cars, even in a show as big as this one.  Oh..don’t get me wrong I love looking at them but writing about the same cars is not very rewarding.  So I’m going to show you some of the cars I really enjoyed.

Of course I’m always drawn to the Vettes.
