Enjoyed looking back at my past when $2.00 would fill both the oil and gas and give change enough for two to go to the movies.

The ‘Corn Alcohol’ pic is very interesting; from the looks of the cars and clothes style I assume late 1930s. I did not know ‘gas-o-hol’ was around that early. I do know that Henry Ford wanted to promote alcohol blened gas as early as the Model A.

I remember the SOHIO stations. SOHIO was Standard Oil of Ohio, and iot seems their franchise stations were always clean, and had good mechanics ‘ON DUTY’.

I also remember that all Standard stations sold ‘ATLAS’ brand EVERYTHING. Tires, shocks, batteries, headlights, mufflers, wipers, filters, and even SPARK PLUGS and Ignition componets.

I once looked at a lightly used 1971 Chevelle stripper with a 307 V8 that was for sale by the old widow up the street. It was 1980, or so, and I was looking for a cheap winter beater. The lady selling the car boasted that the local SOHIO serviced the car meticulously, and it was easy to believe her. That car had ATLAS bulbs, hoses, filters, tires, etc, etc. Oh, the days of local, personal car care service.

The oil companies did a really good job of convincing the public that there was a difference in quality of gas and additives back in those days. I recall my uncle driving 20 miles out of the way while travelling so that he could fill up with TEXACO gas. Today, it seems only SHELL puts out so much marketing effort to convince the public that V POWER really does keep your car running better.

It is interesting that retail gas sales have come ‘full circle’. In the very early days of automobiles, all gas sales was at the local grocery store. There was no such thing as a ‘gas station’. Today, with EPA over regulation, and cut throat competition, only large corporations can sell gasoline. Even here in Tucson, the local Fry’s stores with gas sales have eliminated the corner Chevrons (Catalina Markets).

    Nice pictures!

Let me hear from you!!! Drop a note!!
